Boxer who suffered severe brain injury making improvements

Anyone who has suffered a brain injury or has a loved one who has can find some encouragement in the news about boxer Adonis Stevenson. The one-time light heavyweight world champion was knocked out in the 11th round of a match on Dec. 1 in Quebec City, where he was defending his title. He had been ahead until his opponent, Oleksandr Gvozdyk, landed eight punches in a row, including two hard right punches.

He was eventually able to stand up and get to a stool, where a doctor examined him. Although he at first appeared to be alert, his condition began to deteriorate. The referee ended the fight, and Stevenson was taken from the venue in an ambulance. He lost consciousness on the ride to the hospital.

The 41-year-old boxer suffered a brain injury that was described as catastrophic. He underwent emergency surgery and was in a medically induced coma for weeks afterward.

Now, Stevenson's girlfriend says that "after months of grueling workouts and physical therapy, Adonis has taken his first few steps, and is working towards walking independently." She says that he's also begun to speak to his medical team, family and friends.

The girlfriend, who has a child with Stevenson, says that "these improvements to his condition have not come easy." She says he "has pushed himself as the true champion that he is, incorporating courage and determination into his recovery."

Most brain injuries, of course, aren't suffered in the boxing ring. However, no matter how the injury occurs, it can have a devastating impact on a person's life and health for months and possibly years. Recovery and rehabilitation come with a high price tag. It's wise to determine what your legal options are for seeking compensation to help cover those costs and other expenses and damages.
